MISSION
While the media concentrates on international difficulties, particularly in the Third World, the problems at a national level are often forgotten or pushed into the background.
At the forefront of the constant battle with poverty in Ireland is Protestant Aid whose motto is ‘Care and Compassion in Action’.
HISTORY
Established in 1836 by a group of caring and concerned Protestant citizens, Protestant Aid began to alleviate the extreme poverty which was all too evident in Ireland at a time when workhouses and County Dispensaries were the only ‘official’ relief.
Just as it was so many years ago, people run into financial difficulties due to ill health, family troubles (death, desertion, alcoholism etc.), unemployment or business failure. Today, Protestant Aid handles cases brought to its attention with the same compassion and confidentiality that its founders adopted.
Despite what its name might suggest, Protestant Aid operates on a strictly non-denominational basis and all cases are judged equally, regardless of religious, ethnic or social background and grants are given following reviews by its Manager-Charitable Services. It is aid from Protestants rather than aid for Protestants.
Funded by loyal subscribers and legacies, Protestant Aid dispenses every cent received from subscribers in grant aid. Each year, it helps over 1,100 individuals and families, handling numerous applications for general grants and distributing almost €500,000 annually in charitable giving.

Care and compassion in action since 1836
Protestant Aid was established as a charity over 170 years ago to relieve the horrors of poverty and deprivation in the Republic of Ireland on a strictly non-denominational basis, treating all genuine calls for help equally, regardless of religious, ethnic or social backgrounds.
Its primary activities include:
- grants to alleviate poverty or distress
- annuities for the elderly
- allowances for coal/gas/electricity costs
- school expenses
- second-level education grants (to attend Protestant schools)
- interest-free third-level education loan scheme
- sheltered housing for over 200 elderly people through The Brabazon Trust
Working in tandem with other aid agencies, Protestant Aid helps people whose difficulties have been brought to its attention through social workers, subscribers, caring neighbours and local clergy.
Protestant Aid dispenses every cent received from subscribers in grant aid, an efficiency unsurpassed by few if any charities.
